Cottage Garden

Fans of Isle of Skye, the tile-laying game published by Lookout Games, were understandably thrilled to hear that Digidiced will be releasing an app version of it sometime in 2018.

To whet the whistles of those who have been salivating for more information, Digidiced released a screenshot of the game, and it definitely looks like it’s going to be a winner, at least graphically. It also highlights the interface they are developing for the game, and it looks pretty interesting as well. They are looking for input on how the interface looks, so give them a shout with your thoughts.

Digidiced has made many well-regarded boardgame apps, such as Terra Mystica, Patchwork, Cottage Garden, Agricola: All Creatures Big & Small, Le Havre: Inland Port, and Bohnanza: the Duel. With that track record, fans can be forgiven their enthusiasm.

Board games apps continue to flow as they are a great way to play some of our favorite board games where ever we want, like Tsuro and Cottage Garden.  The Tsuro update is something that just recently launched on the iOS platform as the latest iOS update included tech to be able to utilize augmented reality.  Augmented reality is basically where you can look on your phone for a view of what is front of you, overlaid with information, objects, or other things digitally.  What this means is that now you can “play” Tsuro on your real life table via your iPhone.  Is this really necessary?  No, but it is a cool next step for technology to be able to now see the digital board game on the table in front of you, although still on your screen.  You can download the update now on the App Store.

The second announcement is that another of Uwe Rosenburg’s polyomino games was released today, Cottage Garden.  The app was designed by the company DigiDiced, known for faithfully and effectively translating other games of his to the digital space.  Of course it comes with a list of great features including:

Continuing Uwe Rosenberg‘s exploration of polyominoes, Indian Summer is coming soon from Stronghold Games.  Stronghold Games released Rosenberg’s previous puzzle game in 2016, Cottage Garden, too.  This one features the same beautiful artwork of Andrea Boekhoff, but is touted as being geared toward more experienced gamers:

At the heart of the game are puzzle tiles with holes that are placed on individual forest boards to cover up treasures. When players get their hands on these, they gain more options and an edge over their opponents. All that counts in the end is to be the first to cover your forest floor completely with leaves.

From the publisher’s thematic description:

Before winter makes its appearance, a particularly warm fall bathes the forest in a golden shimmer. During the Indian Summer, New England blossoms one last time. Treetops are ablaze with countless colors — a living rainbow, from green to orange to red. Slowly the first leaves are starting to fall. Meanwhile, our steps and the diligent squirrels rustle the colorful foliage.

Cryptozoic Entertainment is releasing the DC Deck-Building Game Multiverse Box, a large 3 channel card storage box to store all of the DC Deck-Building Games released thus far. The box will fit cards with standard sleeves and comes with foam blocks to hold the cards in place. Included are 20 tabs to organize all sets through the Crossover Pack for Birds of Prey, due out later in 2017. 33 new cards will be included in the Multiverse, including Braniac, Telos and Deimos. Cryptozoic is being a bit… cryptic about which DC event this expansion will be themed around, but they do say that rules for creating multiverses will be available in a few weeks. The DC Deck-Building Game Multiverse Box is due out in mid-2017.

Stronghold Games is releasing Ghost Catchers, a unique card game where players use see-through cards to match ghosts up with their shadows. Sharp eyes and fast hands will help a player achieve victory. The game includes many variations to scale the difficulty from children to adults. Ghost Catchers is due to be released in June 2017.

Cottage Garden, the popular tile laying game by Uwe Rosenberg, is seeing a US release by Stronghold Games. Cottage Garden uses a similar mechanic to the 2 player Patchwork to have players place various shaped flower tiles from the market efficiently into their two garden beds. Players receive a new flower bed whenever they complete an old one, and once a certain number of tiles have left the market, the player with the most points from their completed gardens is the winner. Cottage Garden is due out in June 2017.

 

The folks over at MMOBro apparently play a lot of board games as well as video games, because they decided to put together a list of board games that give a similar feel to popular MMO games.  Some notable examples being if you like Farmville, you might like Cottage Garden for the simplified farming and aiming to maximize your points.  Another popular pairing they make is EVE Online to Twilight Imperium 3, because both are space games that take place on a galactic scale with massive battles, researching of alien tech, and so much more.  They even make the obvious pairing of League of Legends to Mechs vs. Minions, mainly due to the same game company doing both games, but also because they do have a similar feel when playing.  So if you are looking to bring in your MMO playing friends or are an MMO player looking to try some new games, head on over to MMOBro to check out their pairings.
