Fans of the original adventure and survival game Robinson Crusoe: Adventures on the Cursed Island will be interested to know what specific changes will be present in Portal’s new release of the game under the Portal banner. According to Portal’s latest news release, the major notable changes will include:
- a “typical” square game box, as opposed to the original’s coffin box
- a fancier 1st Player Token
- an additional 7th Scenario
- Character Sheets on thick cardboard, as opposed to the thin sheets in the original
- shaped wooden resource components, as opposed to the cubes in the original
- redesigned Discovery Tokens with thematic names on them
- character stickers for the wooden player pawns
- a freshly-reworked rulebook (I like how Portal points out that the original “explains nothing” and the new one “explains everything”)
Preorders are currently being accepted, and this new release is scheduled for release in November of 2016. For more information, visit Portal’s new release here.
More than 13 years after the final episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer aired on TV, Lynnvander Productions has announced, Buffy the Vampire Slayer: The Board Game. Lynnvander set out to make every play through of this game actually feel like an episode of this show, and the proposed 40 – 60 minutes play time certainly carries that point. Up to six players work together, selecting from a number of popular characters, including Buffy, Willow, and Spike to defeat the Master Villain and stop the Hellmouth from opening in Sunnydale. Characters each have a special ability to help them defend the residents of Sunnydale from vampires, demons, and whatever the big bad has cooking.
Jasco Games, Lynvanders partner on this project, has a countdown to its release here. It looks like a late October release, just in time for Halloween.

Elzra Games is currently running a Kickstarter to fund a new fantasy board game that can be played by itself or can expand Catacombs Third Edition. This fast-paced dexterity game serves as an introduction to the Catacombs™ universe and features both cooperative and competitive play styles to engage all players through the game.
The following is a description of the game from the Kickstarter page:
Catacombs & Castles relates the story of Larra the Huntress’ journey to the region of Tellaryth, searching for clues to the whereabouts of her missing wolf companion. This land is governed by four mysterious matriarchs who jealously guard their powers and secrets, frequently from other each. Larra becomes involved with the desperate defence of Castle Mivorih from an invading army of undead warriors. They seem intent on capturing the mysterious keystone from the Hmikad arch, which helps support the east wall of the main keep of the castle. That Xaugorth, evil leader of the Wraith Knights, was motivated to leave his underground lair may be the bigger mystery. Perhaps the tales are true and one of the matriarchs has finally gone too far…
Catacombs & Castles uses Elzra Games’ Dexterity Game System, allowing a minimal learning curve for those familiar with Catacombs™ Third Edition. Catacombs & Castles utilizes a streamlined rule set, faster play times, and some new mechanics, yet still is seamlessly compatible with Catacombs Third Edition and the upcoming Wyverns of Wylemuir expansion.
Catacombs & Castles is a game for 2-6 players ages 14 and up and plays in 30 minutes. For more information on this project, visit its Kickstarter page.
MAGE Company would like to announce two new additions to their “Family Zone” line of party games for friends and family, Carrotia and The Cohort.
Carrot supplies are getting low and the rabbits must brave the wilds to collect enough to feed the colony! Time is short, the pathways long and the birds are circling overhead, looking for easy prey.
In Carrotia, players work together collaboratively to build three different mazes of increasing size. One of the players is the Master Rabbit, whose job is to dash from entrance to exit within a specific number of moves, as outlined by the current mission card. As he does so, he will be scooping up precious carrots while avoiding the owl, hawk and other birds as they swoop low over the zones, causing mayhem and mischief. The other players take on the role of supportive rabbits, lending their unique special abilities to assist the team and and thwart the hungry predators.
Carrotia is for 1-6 players, and includes the following components:
- 40 tiles (70x70mm)
- 3 hourglasses (30, 60, 90)
- 27 quest cards (70x70mm)
- 6 character cards (70x70mm)
- 6 bird tokens
- 30 carrot tokens
- 2 arrow tokens
- 1 wooden rabbit

It is time to polish your armor and sharpen your sword, for mighty Caesar has called for his legions to assemble. So snap them into line as quickly as you can, disrupt the plans of your fellow commanders and show Caesar that your Legion is the greatest in all the Empire.
In The Cohort, players must race to be the first to assemble a Legion and show Caesar you are the greatest of his commanders. Each Legion is made up of 3 different Cohorts and seven different types of units: Praetorians, Catapults, Centurions, Sagittarii, Equites, Legionaries and Velites. Each turn, players draw two cards, keep one and give the other to another player. This card can be kept in hand, or triggered to create a Cohort. Until a Cohort is complete, however, their rowdy behavior works against the recruiting player.
The Cohort includes the following components:
• 6 Primus Pilus cards
• 18 Praetorian cards
• 18 Centurion cards
• 18 Catapult cards
• 24 Sagittarii cards
• 24 Equites cards
• 30 Legionary cards
• 30 Velites cards
• 1 Rulebook
Both games feature brief play times and are accessible to ages 8 and up. You can learn more about Carrotia and The Cohort by visiting the MAGE Company website.

It is said that The Brood have always been with us, hidden out of view, waiting for the right opportunity to makes their presence known. When the world went black and the screaming finally stopped, they emerged from their places of hiding on and beneath the surface, cutting down and feeding on any living thing that stood in their way.
In the dark, Northern Wastes, known as Sector 44, danger lurks in the form of The Brood, a parasitic sect of creatures that dwell in subterranean systems beneath the ruined cities. Only The Outlanders, a team of skilled individuals hired by the surviving settlements, are brave enough to enter the Black Zones to retrieve valuable supplies and technology. In Blackout, players will take on the role of one of these Outlanders, selecting the specialization of either the Tracker, Engineer, Recon, or Slayer and seeking glory and renown.
Blackout is a post-apocalyptic dungeon crawler for 1-4 players by Richard Broadwater. The game features a mission-based leveling system that offers savage combat and exploration and offers 15-20 hours of solo and co-op play. “In Blackout, players will use miniatures on a grid-based board to simulate exploration and combat. Each character is supported by a player card, item, and ability cards. Modifier tokens are used to alter starting stat values of your characters as the campaign progresses. Movement is handled using the grid spaces that are present on all hall or room components. Combat is resolved using fixed-range based on a particular ranged or hand weapon and determined by dice rolls and modifiers.”
Included in the game are the following components:
- 32 high-quality plastic miniatures
- 48-page Rulebook
- 20-page Campaign Book
- Double-sided room and hall sections (representing alleyways/abandoned buildings and underground tunnel/maintenance chambers)

- Item cards
- Event cards
- 6 ten-sided dice

Welcome to a world where creation is but a simple step away from ingenuity and a few simple resources imbued with ancient elements – this is the world of Alkemia. Prepare to harness the primal art of alchemy and join the ranks of creators who have been shaping and reforming the raw world of Alkemia into a thriving livelihood centered around a grand city of Alchemy, Crasis. Governed by a circle of seers and a single Grand Alchemist, who wields boundless talent and protects the ancient secrets of the Greater Elemental Spirits, Crasis currently seeks it’s next Grand Alchemist; this position will be held by one of few summoned to prove their abilities and will be tasked to synthesize the legendary Crest of Creation. This crest, a fabled mysticism documented to usher in the age of alchemy, can only be crafted by one skilled alchemist able to harness the 6 elements – earth, fire, water, air, ether, and fortune.
Alkemia is a resource-management game by KinSoul Studio featuring a modular board and both cooperative and competitive game play. In the game, players are working to become the Grand Alchemist by being the first to collect the elements needed to craft the fabled Crest of Creation. Players will choose from six possible alchemist roles: The “Atelier Magnifico”, The “Charismatic Barkeep”, The “Bog Witch”, The “Gifted Homunculus”, The “Imaginative Tinkerer”, and The Vibrant Healer”.
Alkemia features the following characteristics:
- A resource management, item synthesizing, modular board game for 3 – 6 players ages 14+
- A good balance between luck and strategy that provides you with many possible paths to take.
- High replay-ability: Draft style Field creation, Item recipes shifting around the Bazaar, a different Crest recipe every time, and seemingly endless combinations of abilities will keep you coming back again and again.
- Elements of cooperative and competitive game play, with the focus mainly on your Alchemist’s journey of growth.
- Beautiful original artwork to help you get into the Alkemian spirit.
– Check out a closer look at our characters plus some samples of the artwork (both sketches and finished versions) here.
- An immersive story that you can get in to as much or as little as you desire.
In Alkemia, “players will spend their turns, or phases, either gathering Reagents in the Foraging Field or acquiring Item recipes in the Bazaar. Each turn, the player can choose which zone they wish to interact with, where each zone presents actions that allow for the player to do different things.” In order to craft the Crest of Creation and win the game, players will need to first collect the items necessary to satisfy the revealed recipe, and unlock both of their objects of myth, known as Artifacts. For a look into the mechanisms of the game, visit the rules in PDF form here.
The Alkemia Kickstarter project needs $36,000 to become successful. If its minimum pledge goal is achieved, it will fund on Wednesday, November 18, 2015. For more information on this project, visit its Kickstarter page here.
