Nemo’s War is a fantastic solo board game from publisher Victory Point Games and designer Chris Taylor, originally released in 2009, but which Kickstarted a breathtaking second edition in 2015 featuring new art from Ian O’Toole. After a successful first expansion last year, which added upgrades to the Nautilus, the publisher has now started a new Kickstarter Campaign for expansion pack #2 Bold & Caring, and #3 Dramatis Personae. In Nemo’s War, players take control of Captain Nemo and his crew from Jules Verne‘s novel Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, exploring the oceans in the Nautilus, fighting war ships, discovering treasures, inciting revolution and overcoming story obstacles. One of the main mechanisms in the game is taking on a motive for Nemo, giving each of these actions more or less weighting in the final scoring. Bold & Caring adds two new motive cards to the game, essentially creating completely new ways to play and score high points. Nemo can now be motivated by Adventure, prioritizing exploration, collecting gemstones and taking further advantage of lull turns.
Alternatively the new Humanist motive gives Nemo a Hospital Machine, and allows “diplomatic attacks” on vessels rather than traditional destruction. Dramatis Personae gives more flavor and abilities to the crew with new adventure cards and a new finale. The Kickstarter Campaign for Nemo’s War Expansions #2 & 3 continues through December 18, and is expected to deliver in April 2019.
Literature fans, solo-gamers, and combinations of the two should take notice. Nemo’s War: Second Edition is on Kickstarter, and has already more than doubled its goal with twenty-five days left. Nemo’s War is a theme-dripping solo adventure game based on Jules Verne’s sci-fi classic 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. This 2nd edition completely overhauls the 2009 title and features new artwork from Ian O’Toole (The Gallerist).
Nemo’s War places you in the titular role of the captain of the Nautilus, an electric-powered submarine. You pilot your vessel around the board battling ships and sea-beasts and attempting to accomplish an array of objectives you choose at the outset of your adventure. Victory conditions and difficulty are variable, making Nemo’s War a replayable solo experience. The game was designed by Chris Taylor (Astra Titanus) and will be published by Victory Point games. Some of us may remember the hit space combat game for the PC, Freespace. Now, Interplay’s cult space combat simulator series returns in the form of a tabletop game, FreeSpace Tactics. Led by game designer Chris Taylor, this Kickstarter project seeks to produce a tabletop miniatures game set in the FreeSpace universe.
FreeSpace Tactics is a fast-paced miniatures game of space combat for 2-4 players set in the war-torn FreeSpace universe. Inspired by the intense dogfights of the FreeSpace video games, we have been testing and refining the gameplay of FreeSpace Tactics for more than a year to create a tactical and highly customizable experience beyond the traditional miniatures game.
FreeSpace Tactics seeks to recreate battles set in the FreeSpace universe through ship-to-ship combat scenarios. In this miniatures game for 2-4 players, players are able to customize their ships, move them with move cards designed for each ship, and use especially powerful Ace Cards that grant each ship special abilities.
The core set comes with:
- 4 different plastic ship miniatures
- 6 asteroid tiles
- 2 range rulers
- 80 Move and Ace cards
- 24 Pilot cards
- 1 Rulebook
- 13 dice of 4 different types
- Damage markers
- Shield markers
- Critical hit markers
- Missile Ammo markers
The goal for the project is $75,000, and has currently raised $14,513. For more information on the project, visit the Kickstarter page HERE.
