building

Breaking Games has announced their new upward-moving strategy game Expancity. Play as 1 of up to 4 builders in a city breaking ground and building to the sky as you compete for the most points. Earn points by completing your structures (either commercial or residential,) by building next to coveted locations (but beware of less advantageous locations which can zap points), and by completing goals and contracts. Use strategy to place your tiles and structures in the most point-awarding location and be the best builder in Expancity. Be sure to check out Tom Vasel’s in depth review of the game here! Due to be released in late August,  Expancity is for ages 10 and up and will play in 60-90 minutes.

Days of Wonder would like to announce Yamataï, a new board game themed in a legendary far-eastern kingdom that is governed by the majestic Queen Himiko.  This new board game is designed by Bruno Cathala and Marc Paquien.  What follows is a quote from the official press release from Days of Wonder:

In Yamataï, players have to complete a delicate mission: build the most prestigious city of the kingdom! To accomplish this ambitious task, players transport various resources through the islands of the archipelago and collect Culture Tokens or raise buildings and monuments. Recruiting specialists and using their powers will constitute a decisive strategy for each builder to ultimately obtain Queen Himiko’s favors.

The game rules are simple and easy to learn and players will be making choices that include:

  • choosing the right Fleet Tile in due time to obtain resources and useful powers
  • carefully observing other players’ actions
  • following numerous paths to victory to become the master builder

A copy of the game will include:

  • 1 lavishly illustrated game board
  • 4 player mats with meeples
  • 80 wooden boats carrying resources (bamboo, wood, stone, clay, gold)
  • 10 Fleet Tiles
  • 28 Building Tiles (21 Standard Buildings and 7 Prestige Buildings, each represented with wooden figures)
  • 7 Mountain Tiles
  • 34 Culture Tokens
  • 8 Sacred Ground tokens
  • 73 Coins
  • 24 Prestige Point Tokens
  • 18 Specialist Tiles

imhotep

ACD Distribution has just released some information on two upcoming games from Thames & KOSMOS, Imhotep and Smugglers.  In Imhotep you are Egyptian architects trying to build the great wonders of the world from obelisks, to temples, to the great pyramids in order to be just like Imhotep, an architect whose awe-inspiring structures and brutal tactics earned him divine status among his people.  To accomplish this you will have to excavate building blocks, transport them to the different construction sites, and then add them to the structure at that site.  The difficult part comes in that on your turn you have only one action you can take, excavate a block, load a ship, or move a ship, so ships you load may be moved by an opponent and vice versa.  Negotiations will be tight and it’s a race to see who can be the best builder, look for this game on store shelves June 15th.

smugglers

The second game is Smugglers, which has a clay shaping aspect like Dohdles, but with a smuggling twist.  You are a new smuggler on the block auditioning to be in the big gang, but to do this you will have to smuggle as much loot as you can through a hole in a fence.  On your turn a roll of the die will determine which hole in the fence you have to go through, then you pick which contraband you will try to sneak through and conceal it inside a ball of rubbery polymer putty.  Once you have formed your ball you roll it down the chute and if it passes through the fence then you get to keep the contraband, if it gets stuck then other players can take it from you if they guess what is inside.  The same can happen if you make the ball too small, if other players can guess what is inside then they steal it, and whoever has the most contraband at the ends wins.  Look for this interesting family game to arrive on store shelves June 15th.

Academy Games would like to announce their upcoming game releases for June of 2016.  These releases are:

Mare Nostrum: Empires is a building game in which 3-5 players lead their individual empires to dominion of the ancient world.  You grow the fame and glory of your empire by expanding your influence into new Provinces, then extending your Trade Caravans, building Markets, and founding new Cities and Temples.  You may also recruit Heroes and create Wonders to advance your Empire’s cause.  But beware of your ‘friends’, for they may look upon your gains with envy and greed…and thwart your progress towards dominance of Mare Nostrum!

  • Choose Your Leader
  • Choose Your Strategy
  • Grow into a Trade Empire
  • Become a Hero
  • Conquer Your Enemies
  • Play in a Beautiful World with High Quality Components and a Thick Mounted Game board

Conflict of Heroes: Guadalcanal

This stand-alone product continues the multi-award-winning Conflict of Heroes series.  In this game, players command platoons and companies of individual squads and tanks to resolve the same tactical dilemmas that commanders faced during some of the most ferocious engagements of World War II.

In this game, the Americans track Victory Points, but the Japanese track Bushido.  If a Japanese commander loses face during battle, his command and men’s morale can crumble.  Conflict of Heroes: Guadalcanal features a fast and fluid system (quick and simultaneous play) that is fun, easy (no charts), historically accurate, and contains high-quality components.

Look for both of these titles to be released in stores in June of 2016.  For more information on these titles, visit the Academy Games website.
