Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Today Restoration Games gave what is arguably their biggest announcement yet. Unmatched is the restoration of Star Wars: Epic Duels, whose design became the basis of Heroscape. That’s not the only thing that makes this announcement so big, however, as Unmatched isn’t just one game – it will be a line of products featuring a variety of themes and intellectual properties. It’s such an undertaking, in fact, that Restoration Games isn’t doing this alone; They are collaborating with Mondo Games, the publishers behind The Thing: Infection at Outpost 31, who will be bringing their extended partnerships to bear.

“Unmatched pits two or four players against each other, with each player taking the role of their own hero. Each hero is represented by a unique ability and a custom deck of action cards, and each set comes with a double-sided board with different battlefields. The first two sets in the line are Battle of Legends, Vol. 1 and the eponymous Robin Hood vs. Big Foot. The Battle of Legends set includes King Arthur, Alice, Medusa, and Sinbad. Heroes from any set can be played against each other, making for surprising and exciting matchups and tons of replayability.”

These first sets will debut at Gen Con this year, but that’s far from all of it. There will be a Bruce Lee limited edition pack and a Buffy the Vampire Slayer set expected to release later this year as well. This is exactly the kind of thing fans have been clamoring for since Restoration Games started taking requests, and it’s fun to see it come alive at last and with so many cool characters to kick it all off. Unfortunately this one article alone won’t do it all justice, so to learn more about Unmatched be sure to visit Restoration Games’ website for further reading and updates.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer was a cult TV show about a vampire slayer and her friends and allies who defend the small town of Sunnydale from a constant onslaught of vampires and “Big Bads”, who were trying to bring about the end of the world. Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Friends & Frenemies is an expansion for Buffy the Vampire Slayer: The Board Game (published by Jasco Games) where 1-6 players take on the roles of Buffy and the Scooby Gang to save the town.

The expansion adds 6 new characters (Dawn, Riley, Tara, Anya, Faith, and Oz, who can be either human or werewolf) and 2 new “Big Bads” (Spike & Drusilla, and Dark Willow). A new board, which includes new Initiative locations, is also added.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Friends & Frenemies is expected to release in June of 2019.

Upper Deck Entertainment has just posted a blog article reviewing their 13 card and board game releases for 2017. Legendary, the very popular deck building system, added the small expansions Legendary Spider-Man: Homecoming, Marvel Legendary: Noir, and the larger Marvel Legendary: X-Men. Additionally, the Legendary system welcomed the new standalone game Legendary: Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

VS System 2PCG had a number of changes and additions last year, including Legacy, Monsters Unleashed, S.H.I.E.L.D. vs Hydra, and The Predator Battles. The games have also undergone a huge change in their publication format, and Upper Deck has said the small box expansions (now known as Giant-Sized Issues) will be released much less frequently.

There were also 5 original games released in 2017, including The Dingo Ate The Baby, Dread Draw, Dungeon Draft, Quest for the Antidote. Finally, Upper Deck released the wonderfully campy hidden movement one-vs-many game Shark Island from Richard Launius and Pete Shirey.

More than 13 years after the final episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer aired on TV, Lynnvander Productions has announced, Buffy the Vampire Slayer: The Board Game. Lynnvander set out to make every play through of this game actually feel like an episode of this show, and the proposed 40 – 60 minutes play time certainly carries that point. Up to six players work together, selecting from a number of popular characters, including Buffy, Willow, and Spike to defeat the Master Villain and stop the Hellmouth from opening in Sunnydale. Characters each have a special ability to help them defend the residents of Sunnydale from vampires, demons, and whatever the big bad has cooking.

Jasco Games, Lynvanders partner on this project, has a countdown to its release here. It looks like a late October release, just in time for Halloween.
