Academy Games

Academy Games, known for their excellent and historically accurate games, is Kickstarting their latest offering, 878 Vikings – Invasions of England.  This is an area control game similar to their other war games where the invading armies of the Vikings are striking at the heart of England.  The game plays 2 to 4 players with one side being the English nobles defending their country, and the other side playing the Vikings trying to pillage the countryside.  You will play cards to move your troops, invade different areas or the board, build forts, or place out more troops.  After a while players will have the option to call for the Treaty of Wedmore, which will end the game, and whoever controls more land at that point will be the winner.

The Kickstarter has flown through the stretch goals unlocking more cards, miniatures for the armies instead of cubes, wooden card holders and more.  They are also offering multiple add-ons you can pledge for in the form of their other games, expansions for 878 Vikings, and limited edition figures.  Needless to say if you are interested in historical games, or games featuring vikings, check out their Kickstarter page today.

Some games benefit greatly from a digital adaption, mostly because of ease of accessibility and increased exposure to a different crowd of gamers. While it can feel somber to lose the tactile joy of manipulating  cards or miniatures, the loss of fiddly bits in lieu of speed and convenience can be enough of a pleasing alternative to reward the jump from tabletop to video game. 1775: Rebellion, the immensely popular war game from Academy games, has made such a leap and is available right now on PC through the Steam marketplace. Developed by HexWar Games, this version of the award winning board game offers several exclusive, and admittedly expected, features as described on the game’s store page:

“Now you and your friends command the armies of the British Redcoats, English Loyalists, German Hessians, American Regulars, Patriots, French Regulars and Native Americans to decide the fate of the Americas. Players from each faction cooperate to gain control of key towns and forts. Share the fun in this light and fast paced game vs the AI, hotseat or online!”

PC players 1775 normal and short scenarios, as well as the Siege of Quebec, all available in solo vs 3 AI difficulties or through local and cross-platform multiplayer. As of writing this, the game has been updated to version 1.03 which has addressed many interface issues mentioned in early reviews of the game. The dedication to faithfully delivering the tabletop experience to PC is echoed by the majority of positive reviews currently on Steam. Academy Games has hired on David Lowry, from the Lowry Agency and Club Fantasci, to head up their marketing department as it’s director.  You might remember David from his work in promoting board games though short sale videos and designer interviews.  Or Club Fantasci which, for a short time, gave out board game awards but also helped run the Kickstarter for the Dale of Merchants 2 card game.  We hope this new arrangement will bring both David and Academy games great success in the future, you can read the press release from David Lowry below.

Conflict of Heroes: Guadalcanal

This stand-alone product continues the multi-award-winning Conflict of Heroes series.  In this game, players command platoons and companies of individual squads and tanks to resolve the same tactical dilemmas that commanders faced during some of the most ferocious engagements of World War II.

In this game, the Americans track Victory Points, but the Japanese track Bushido.  If a Japanese commander loses face during battle, his command and men’s morale can crumble.  Conflict of Heroes: Guadalcanal features a fast and fluid system (quick and simultaneous play) that is fun, easy (no charts), historically accurate, and contains high-quality components.

Academy Games will be releasing a couple of new expansions for their Conflict of Heroes series this coming October and December.

Conflict of Heroes: Awakening the Bear: Solo Expansion

This Solo Expansion will be released in October 2015.

The Conflict of Heroes Solo Boardgame System revolutionizes solo tactical play. The Artificial Intelligence (AI) utilizes a unique Emergent Behavior and Agent Based Logic system. With this system, each battlefield situation is evaluated and the AI implements the best course of action using available resources and unit assets. This will included several stand-alone missions, and two full campaigns covering the German 1941 advance on Moscow. You will need to won Conflict of Heroes: Awakening the Bear base game in order to play this expansion.

Conflict of Heroes: Awakening the Bear: Firefight Generator

Firefight Generator will be released in December 2015.

Awakening the Bear: Firefight Generator builds on Academy Games’ award-winning Conflict of Heroes series for a whole new experience. Players use strategy and cunning to manipulate the battlefield and available forces to create an engagement set to their advantage. This expansion for Awakening the Bear 2nd Edition includes everything you need to create countless Firefights; from solo Firefights that make use of Awakening the Bear: Solo Expansion to giant, multi-map, four-player battles!

To create a unique new Firefight, players alternate playing Generator Cards to choose their units, Victory Point conditions, weapons, weather conditions, and more. Players can bluff, outmaneuver, and thwart their opponents…all before the Firefight even begins!

Mare Nostrum: Empires from Academy Games and Asyncron is a new version of Mare Nostrum a 2003 empire-building game both designed by Serge Laget. With updated rules, components, board, and new ways to win it takes what was great in Mare Nostrum and improves on it. It is also currently blowing through stretch goals on Kickstarter and adding huge amounts of gameplay as it does.

Mare Nostrum is a re-introduction by Academy Games and Asyncron of the original 2003 release with updated rules, counters, and map board. This edition includes many new components and multiple new ways to win!

There were a lot of changes to the original game made before the launch including two more victory conditions, another resource type, additional buildings, a revamped trade system, and custom battle dice to name a few. Also a lot of the stretch goals add game play like the Punic Wars rulebook that adds in two player support. A lot of these stretch goals will be combined into the Atlas Expansion that will be included free for a backers. Yes your pledge on Kickstarter will get you the new game and an expansion that will be separate at retail. The artwork has also been redone by the talented Jean-Marie Minguez.

In the game players will start with an empire that has a unique bonus and try to expand by using resources to build markets, cities, caravans, etc.. They will  expand into adjacent provinces through influence or military might and acquire new heroes and and wonders. This will be paid for by taxing cities and collecting goods from caravans. Battles will be fought by Legions who will be able to travel the seas with the use of Triremes. As your empire grows it will move up three tracks: Trade, Culture, and Military and the leader in each will gain additional powers and benefits.

As stated above Mare Nostrum: Empires is rapidly adding on stretch goals including component upgrades, new events and heros, small expansions, additional tracking boards, and 3D components for legion tokens, fortresses, and ships. It is also available in multiple languages including English, French, German, Polish, Italian, and Spanish.
