One may not think that the New York Magazine would be
the place to look for board game recommendations, but for the past couple of
years the magazine has featured articles on board gaming as part of life and
culture in New York City. Its latest
article, featured in its Strategist section which helps shoppers focus
on getting the best value for their money, identified the
best four-player board games according to experts. These experts included game
store owners, board game reviewers, and even a board game illustrator, so it
should be no surprise that the list included some heavy hitters in the board
game hobby and include several Spiel des Jahres winners. Some of the
games on the list do play more than four players, but the experts felt that
these games played best with four players.

best family-friendly four-player game, best board game for advanced gamers, best

Spin Master Games has partnered with Wiggles 3D Games to produce and sell the retail version of 5-Minute Dungeon. 5-Minute Dungeon is a co-operative, real-time dungeon crawling card game for 2-5 players that plays in 5 minutes, andwas successfully funded on Kickstarter last year with almost 8,000 backers.
The retail version has an all-new cover in a unique hourglass-shaped box and comes with:
200 player cards (5 decks of 40 cards each)
50 dungeon cards (40 door cards and 10 challenge cards)
5 double sided player mats (10 heroes total)
5 boss mats
As expected, the retail version doesn’t include the extra content added during the campaign (the Kickstarter deck, Baby Barbarian figurine, and 2 Kickstarter boss mats), but still has the same high quality components as the Kickstarter edition.

Real time games can be a whole lot of fun, and can be a whole lot of stress, for examples look at Escape: the Curse of the Temple for the first, and XCOM for the second. 5 Minute Dungeon aims to go the fun route with funny illustrations, a short play time, and easy to use icons and rules to enable people to easily play the game quickly.
To play 5 Minute Dungeon you will first pick your class deck, like barbarian or ninja or wizard. Next you grab the boss you will be facing, and which boss you face will decide the dungeon deck size. Each door card in the dungeon deck will have different events, obstacles, or monsters you have to overcome. Events will make bad things happen like discarding your hand or just a few cards, while monster or obstacle cards will have icons that as a group you have to discard in order to defeat them. Each player will also have abilities or spells unique to their class deck that will allow them to do things like defeat enemies or draw additional cards. When everyone is ready you will draw your starting hand, start the timer, and you have 5 minutes to defeat every card in the dungeon and then the dungeon boss. If you manage to get all the way through without running out of cards or time, you win! But don’t celebrate too much, that was just the first and you still have more dungeon bosses to take down.
The game sounds like a blast and would work great as a game night starter or filler between games. The art by Alex Diochon is excellent and has a fantasy cartoon like feel to it which gives the whole game a fun atmosphere.
