Step aside 9th century pricing and Norse raiding…

Vikings, designed by Michael Kiesling, orginally published by Hans im Glück game, has been picked up for a reprint by Z-Man games.  This spring you can lead your Vikings to discover islands and claim your fortune.

In Vikings, two to four players do not pillage each other but bid against them to buy tiles and Viking meeples.  The main game board has a spinning roundel used for the offering each round.  At the start of the round, an offering of 12 sets are placed around the roundel.  A set consists of a randomly drawn Viking meeple and tile.  The cost of each set is determined by the roundel and if there is not a set at zero, the roundel is rotated clockwise to the next available set.  The current player purchases a set and immediately place the tile and Viking in their play area.  Alternating in clockwise order, players continue to purchase available sets.  Once all the offerings have been taken, the round ends and players score their play area.  After six rounds, players conduct a final scoring phase and the most successful Viking leader wins the game.

Components, from the 2007 edition, included 1 main game board and 4 player bases, 8 player markers (2 in each player color), 45 cardboard coins, 78 viking meeples with a cloth bag, and 76 tiles.

Only a reprint has been announced; no news on Z-Man making any updates to the game.

Limes, designed by Martyn F, will be presented by Abacus Spiele in Nürnberg.  Limes is a re-implementation of Martyn’s 2008 Cities, a tile placement game where players work to build the most attractive cities in the world.

Differences between the two games include scoring and tile layouts.  Limes is a game for one or two players and comes with two sets of 24 cards and 14 wooden figures.  To start the game, a player shuffles their deck and randomly places the top card face up on the table, creating their own play area.  Future cards, or territories, must be placed so that they touch (by side or corner) another card in the play area.  A figure can either be placed on the newly added territory or an already placed figure can move to an adjacent territory.  The game ends when a player has created a 16 card square and players score their figures.  The player with the highest score wins.

A new face to Love Letter is set to release this February from AEG.  Art and characters from the Legend of the Five Rings universe have been added to Seiji Kanai’s 2013 bluffing and deduction game.

Love Letter is a card game for two to four players.  Each player is trying to gain enough tokens of affection to win the heart of the princess, or in this version, Iweko Miaka.  The game is played over a series of rounds until Iweko has given enough tokens of affection to a player.  At the start of the game, each player receives a card, that they keep secret and in their hand.  On a player’s turn, they draw the top card of the draw pile and discard one of their two cards, applying the card’s affect.  Each card has a value and at the end of the round, the highest value in players’ hands is closest to the princess and wins the round.

Characters included in L5R version of Love Letter are Iweko Miaka, Togashi Gozato, Doji Takato, Matsu Misato, Isawa, Tenkawa, Kaiu Akemi, Shosuro Yamazaki, and Seppun Tasuke.
