Capes and Villians is a 1-5 player card and dice game. In Capes and Villains, you are already in the heat of the battle. There are no preparation or equipment phases, no pre-planning or gradual movement into battle. Nope, you are there, getting your cape tightened around your neck or dishing out the pain yourself. Gameplay should seem a bit crazy and even spontaneous at times, but believe us when we say that under the mask is actually a lot of strategy.
The closing date on Kickstarter is April 8, 2014, the funding goal for the project is $25,000. Pledge $35 for a copy of Capes and Villains as well as any unlocked Stretch Goals. The estimated delivery date is Nov 2014.
Mound Builders, from Wes Erni and Ben Madison, is a solitaire States of SiegeTM game where you represent the two largest pre-Columbian Indian “mound builder” cultures that dominated eastern North America from before the time of Christ until the coming of the European colonists in the 17th century. Your empire represents the earlier Hopewell culture and the later Mississippian culture that derived from it.
Until the arrival of the Spanish late in the game, you will expand your control across the map of North America, extending it over the various chiefdoms encountered and incorporating them into your economic and religious sphere (“empire”). Your domain will grow and shrink, but be aware that rather than a military advance and retreat, this process represents the rise and decline of culture, religious ideology, and an economic way of life, threatened from outside by competing ideologies and lifestyles as much as by hostile armies.
Your goal is to extend Mound Builder culture and amass as many chiefdoms as possible before rival native powers (and the smallpox-ridden Spanish!) rise up to drive you back to your Mississippi River heartland and extinguish your vast capital city at Cahokia, Illinois.

Hull Breach: Corporate Wars
Hull Breach is a sci-fi cards-and-dice game set in the future and puts players in command of a space station out among the stars. Their mission is to improve their station, build a powerful fleet of warships and Marines, and then destroy their opponents with help from various events, tactics and technological breakthroughs!
Players take turns drawing cards, managing their per-turn economic gain, and manufacturing what forces they can before deciding whether or not to attack their enemies or continue biding their time. Games can be short and brutal, or they can be long and cautious, but the end result is the same: only one player can be left standing to achieve dominance of the sector. Some players will be adept at producing sheer numbers of ships, others at making a smaller number of ships more powerful individually, and others at simply stalling, manipulating, and controlling their foes.
Hull Breach: Corporate Wars comes with three pre-constructed 55-card decks representing the “Big Three” mega-corporations: Xeros Engineering, Anaheim Manufacturing, and the Bank of the Galaxy – each with its own different playstyle.
Hull Breach: Loyalty & Vengeance
Hull Breach: Loyalty & Vigilance is a companion set to Hull Breach: Corporate Wars and can be combined with the first set or played as a stand-alone game. Hull Breach: Loyalty & Vigilance introduces two new factions to compete with the Corporations: The Republic Defense Force and the Colonials and also includes the “Stellar Tax Gate Bureau,” a deck which is a new member of the Corporate faction.
In April, The Woodbury Expansion will be released from Cryptozoic Entertainment. This expansion is for their 2013 release The Walking Dead Board Game: The Best Defense.
The Best Defense is a cooperative game where players take on the role of characters from AMC’s The Walking Dead and defend four locations from Walkers. The Woodbury Expansion will bring Woodbury as a new location for the survivors. In addition, the Governor will now be moving around the game board, each turn arriving at a new location causing chaos.
In the base game, players could experience two different modes, beginner and expert. The expansion will introduce a versus mode. In this mode, one player will play as the Governor, working against the other players. If they don’t win as a team, then the Governor wins.
Next week, Cryptozoic Entertainment will fulfill Kickstarter project backer rewards for last year’s The Doom That Came to Atlantic City.
In 2012, publisher The Forking Path began the Kickstarter project with a $35,000 goal and in June 2012 the project was successfully backed at $122,874. Over the next thirteen months, backers received a decline in communication from the publisher. In July 2013 the project was cancelled by Forking Path and no rewards had been delivered. By the end of the month, Cryptozoic Entertainment reached out to the game’s designer, Keith Baker and Cryptozoic became the new publisher. Without any of the kickstarter money, their first priority was to ensure that all project backers received their copy of the game.
On March 26, Cryptozoic will ship the game to all project backers. On April 2 the game will be released to everyone else.
The Doom That Came to Atlantic City is a roll and move board game based on H.P. Lovecraft’s universe. Players are each Great Old Ones that have been locked up for some time. As each player travels around the board, they compete with each other doing as much destruction as possible in their own Cthulhu way.

Stronghold Games Press Release
Stronghold Games is proud to announce a major 2014 hobby board game release, Kanban: Automotive Revolution, an interactive resource management and economic strategy game, showcasing the automobile manufacturing process that introduced revolutionary efficiencies during the 1970s and is still in practice today.
The term Kanban comes from a scheduling system for lean and just-in-time (JIT) production. This system was first adopted by Japanese automobile manufacturing, leading to a revolution in the automobile industry, enabling great cost reduction via efficiency and automation. Kanban and other systems like it have now transformed manufacturing in every country, modernizing the automotive industry around the world.
In Kanban: Automotive Revolution, players represent ambitious workers in an automobile manufacturing facility. You will work to impress the company’s management team, including the factory manager, CEO and board of directors via execution of an efficient manufacturing process. Managing of logistics and supplies, designing innovative technology enhancements, and exercising good judgement in the projects undertaken are crucial to your success and promotion within the company. KanBan is a game with multiple paths to victory that will reward strategic planning and timely execution.
Like the process itself, Kanban: Automotive Revolution will prove to be both innovative and rewarding. Game mechanics, which are tightly tied to the automobile manufacturing theme, include:
- The factory manager, a game driven non-player character with two modes of play (“nice” or “mean”), offers a friendly or more competitive gameplay environment.
- Two independent player-influenced game timers, the factory production cycle and work week clock, provide timing tension to the game, trigger intermediate scoring phases, and factor into the game end conditions.
- A simulation of the factory assembly line with spatial point-to-point movement adds an element to the game that requires optimal timing.
- A design and innovation department, leveraged to manipulate the value of the various car models and component upgrades produced within the factory, drives the economy of the game.
- Departmental training and certification tracks provide players a means to operate more efficiently.
If players want a seat on the board someday, they need to show that they can keep a complex machine running smoothly and efficiently, with everything executing just-in-time (JIT).
“This game publication marks a significant moment in the history of Stronghold Games”, said Stephen Buonocore, President of Stronghold Games. “The signing of this major eurogame by such an important designer in the industry is a milestone for us. We know that Kanban will be received in the same great light as Vital Lacerda’s first two critically acclaimed games, Vinhos and CO2.”
“I am really excited to have the opportunity to work with Stronghold Games again”, said designer Vital Lacerda.“On this project, the Stronghold Games development team was instrumental to the final design. Fans of my existing heavy game designs, as well as medium weight eurogame hobbyists, will appreciate the depth and originality of the core game mechanics.”
Kanban: Automotive Revolution is scheduled to premiere in Essen, Germany in October at the annual Spiel game convention. Stronghold Games may have advanced copies available to demo or purchase at Gen Con in Indianapolis, Indiana USA in August.
AEG Announced Doomtown Reloaded
Many of you may remember the old CCG game from AEG published in 1998 called Deadlands: Doomtown. It was a popular American West collectible card game that was quite unique due to its poker-like battling system. Well Todd Rowland, Senior Brand Manager at AEG, announced on his Facebook page the upcoming release of Doomtown reloaded. Here’s what he had to say:
Well as some of you may have figured out, we have a bit of an announcement at GAMA this week, regarding a certain little title called… Doomtown: Reloaded!
Now the site will go live, all the BGG stuff, all the social media, all that jazz on Tuesday, but since you here have been the die-hards who have kept Doomtown going all these years I thought it was only right to come to you first and share the news.
Doomtown: Reloaded has been in the works for quite a while now. It’s a single-box game, no more collectible cards. You buy it, you get all the base set, including four faction outfits for building decks. Very shortly after the release we’ll have our first saddlebag expansion which feature a selection of new cards.
We’re going to have organized play events, the Badge Series (which we’ll tell more about in June leading up to the release) and more. We are releasing at GenCon and will have an inaugural tournament for the game there this year as well. So come ready to play!
Now, we figure you have a lot of questions, so I’m going to answer what i can here, and if I didn’t cover it, assume I probably can’t talk about it yet. We do have a plan for the release of information since we are 5 months away.
1. Is this a continuation of Doomtown or a new game?
– Well kinda both. It continues Doomtown in the sense that it’s Gomorra, but a while later. A few faces you remember are around, but much of the town is new citizens. You could in theory play the new game with old cards, but it would require sleeves (hint, the backs have changed). While that’s totally cool for casual play, for official events it’s Reloaded only.
2. Will there be a story?
– Yes there will be. It won’t be as deep and involved as the L5R story but there is a plotline and there will be LIMITED chances for players to have an impact.
3. Hrm… what’s this about streamlining?
– We have done all we can to make the game inviting and accessible to new players, while still being Doomtown. Mostly this is clearing up of some effects, making cards more straightforward, eliminating other rules that were extraneous, etc. You’ll be able to learn all about it when the rulebook is made public in a month or so.
4. What’s this about a deluxe box?
– We will have the basic box that will be the intro set, then we’ll also have a deluxe box that has the same cards but comes in a wood case, with real clay poker chips, metal ghost rock coins, and wooden outfit cards. Really swanky. There will be a limited number of these available.
5. Is that Wendy on the cover?
– Why yes, yes it is.
6. So what’s with the factions this time? Where’s my Collegium?
– With the big shift in Gomorra, some factions have simply uprooted and left town, or were wiped out. In the newly rebuilding town, we have:
– The Law Dogs, still around, still trying to hold it together.
– The Sloane Gang, a dirty bunch that’s all about causing trouble.
– The Morgan Cattle Company – who have set up some ranches outside of town for testing new breeding and feeding programs with their R&D department.
– The Fourth Ring, a really cool circus that I swear has been here a while but it seems like they just got here yesterday… but i know i saw that poster on the barber shop a month ago… hey you wanna go to that new circus tonight?
7. Are any other factions going to come back?
– Perhaps in the future, but not for a while. This is the new town.
8. What about hexes, gadgets, blessings, abominations?
– All that will be revealed in the next few months.
So that’s all I can really get into now. I will say that we really hope you all will join us in this new endeavor. We will be going aggressively after new customers, as that’s what every new launch has to do, so most of our marketing may not exactly be speaking to you as much. That said, we really hope you’ll be the focal point of new communities of players at your local stores and hangouts. Our big focus is going to be on building communities of players in the early months, and you all will be vital to that.
Thank you again for all of your dedication to Doomtown over the years. We hope you’ll enjoy Reloaded!
