Stronghold Games Proclaims 2014 “The Year of Space Cadets”, Announces 3 New Game Titles in the Space Cadets line
Stronghold Games is proud to declare 2014 as “The Year of Space Cadets” as it announces 3 new game titles for their award-winning and best-selling Space Cadets line of games.
Space Cadets: Away Missions is a standalone game in the Space Cadets universe. It is a cooperative, tactical action game for 1-6 players, artistically set in the Golden Age of science fiction, and thematically a prequel to the originalSpace Cadets. Players take on the roles of adventurous human spacemen as they move outside the relative safety of their ship, exploring UFOs, acquiring Alien technology, and fighting hostile extraterrestrials. Space Cadets: Away Missions contains 15 scenarios linked in a campaign story arc, and utilizes modular hexagonal map tiles to create the locations that the players explore on their Away Missions. Cooperation and tactical planning are essential if the spacemen hope to overcome the relentless onslaught of Alien creatures.
Space Cadets: Dice Duel – Die Fighter is the first expansion to last year’s smash-hit Space Cadets: Dice Duel, “The Team vs. Team, Real-time, Dice-Rolling Game of Starship Combat!”, supporting 2 new play modes. In Carrier Strikemode, each team will command a second ship on the board as well, which is a faster, more maneuverable, but more fragile Fighter-class ship. With 4 ships on the board, Carrier Strike mode will now support up to 10 players. In Fighter Duel mode, 2 players man fighters in head-to-head combat for quick and intense battles. Die Fighter expansion now provides support for 2 to 10 players.
Space Cadets: Resistance Is Mostly Futile is the first expansion for the original Space Cadets. In this expansion, each station has access to the Psycho-Acoustic Neural Interface Control (P.A.N.I.C.) button, which gives players new options if things aren’t going quite as expected. This expansion also includes new Missions, including quick play ones for a faster game, new enemies like the mysterious space beasts, new Map Tiles with new hazards, and other challenges that will test the most seasoned crew of Space Cadets.
“In proclaiming 2014 ‘The Year of Space Cadets’, Stronghold Games is sending a clear message to our fans”, said Stephen Buonocore, President of Stronghold Games. “We will continue to support our major game lines like ‘Space Cadets’, as well as ‘Survive!’ and ‘Core Worlds’, bringing out new games and expansions for these great, highly-regarded game lines. We are very excited to be working on these projects this year.”
“We are very excited to have ‘Away Missions’ be a part of the ever expanding Space Cadets universe. Many thanks to both the Engelsteins and Stronghold Games for this opportunity, and to artist Bill Bricker for turning our ideas into the coolest looking board game this side of Alpha Centauri”, said co-designers Dan Raspler and Al Rose. “And please, keep watching the skies!”
“We are thrilled about the reception that the Space Cadets games have received from players”, said Sydney Engelstein, designer of Space Cadets and Space Cadets: Dice Duel. Adds co-designer Geoff Engelstein, “Away Missions and the new expansions give us the opportunity to make the Space Cadets universe a richer and more dynamic place, while keeping innovative cooperative play at its core.”

HoldFast: Russia 1941-42
On June 22, 1941, the German army attacked Russia in the largest land battle the world would ever know. Millions of soldiers and civilians would lose their lives in a vicious life or death struggle that would decide the fate of the Third Reich. The German army came within miles of capturing their main objectives in 1941 and 1942, each time to have victory snatched from them by a micro-managing leader, poor planning, poor supply, bad weather, and a Russian army that was determined to fight to the death. From 1943 onward the fate of Germany was sealed.
HoldFast Russia 1941-42 is our strategic World War II game on the Russian Campaign. It is the first of Worthington Games Campaigns of World War II series.
It uses wooden blocks for fog of war and hex movement. Clean mechanics and a manageable number of units allow for the entire campaign to be played in a evening. Objectives are clear. Hold two of the three victory location cities at the end of the game. But with mud and supplies a constant factor, German armor always a threat, and winter bringing a boost to Russian resources and manpower, it is not easy for either side to HOLDFAST. “The world will hold its breath…”

Coming in March from Game Salute
The Rockwell company wants to develop drilling activities, but does not have the necessary teams in-house so Rockwell has decided to buy into specialized companies. In order to determine which company it will put on the most advanced and most profitable projects in the future, Rockwell has elected to make them work together on a single important project: drilling through the depths of the earth’s crust to the core.
Through three phases of gameplay, players will move their drill crews to Earth crust tiles to harvest the best minerals and resources and can improve their odds by deploying the vice president to corrupt opposing crews or high subcontractors to increase the drilling power. After four rounds, the mines laid on the drilled tiles provide the resources printed on the back of the tiles.
These resources are then sold and bought through the vice president on the market which then leads into the phase where players can then make investments to get renown points and improve their drilling conditions in future rounds.
The end of the game is determined when the majority of the players have reached the center of the Earth with a drill crew or a player has completed the nine Achievement cards, each with various goals or tasks on them. The company who demonstrates the greatest expertise in the technical and financial management of this contract will ensure a bright future with Rockwell.
A murder has been committed in the Victorian steampunk city of St. Sebastian. You have made the short list of police suspects and the only way to retain your freedom is to prove that one of the others on the list is in fact the murderous culprit.
Players take turns making Accusations against the other players by placing Method, Motive, or Opportunity cards in front of them or providing Alibis against the Accusations made against them by other players. You must remember what has been played and craft your Accusations well to pin the murder on another player.
Ruse uses cards with specialized suits and amazing steampunk artwork to tell the story of murder and mayhem under the gaslights of St. Sebastian.
As a bonus, the deck may also be used to play all of your favorite traditional card games.
BoardGame Geek member Zopper-Alf’s Expedit-ed Collection
You’ve probably heard by now. Bad news has issued forth from the land of Sweden, and the future is bleak for obsessive, storage-conscious board-gamers across the world.
That’s right, IKEA has cancelled the EXPEDIT. First hinted at on the company’s German Facebook page, confirmed by the Huffington Post, and having spawned plenty of furor/sadness/randomness on BoardGame Geek and even a Facebook group to save the wonderful little shelving squares.
Thankfully, the EXPEDIT will be replaced in April with a new shelving unit called KALLAX. Whether or not this lives up to the legend, and the exacting standards of the board gaming enthusiasts everywhere remains to be seen.
Let it be known that the EXPEDIT will remain on sale until they’ve sold out completely. Considering the great gnashing of teeth that has issued forth from the hallowed halls of Twitter, however, you might want to empty your trunk and make way to the land of Billy the Bookcase and strange Swedish food.
