The Battle at Kemble’s Cascade is a board game adaptation of a classic shoot ’em up video game. In the game, which is played out on a scrolling space backdrop, the players take on the roles of brave space pilots sweeping around in nimble yet powerful fighters, searching the asteroid clusters for universal glory and ancient technology. Players compete to obtain the most glory, with glory resulting from carrying out missions, finding lost treasure in asteroid clusters, and destroying alien entities, not to mention other players.
In the game, players fly through an ever-scrolling space setting, which is represented by rows of cards. Each turn, the bottom row is removed and a new row is added to the top. Players move their spaceships and resolve effects continuously, performing actions such as collecting power-ups and money, fighting alien cruisers and titans, blocking and shooting other players, and dodging asteroids and black holes. The players need to balance the use of their ships’ energy as it’s used for both absorbing enemy fire and boosting their movement speed and fire rate.
The game includes missions and achievements as well as a mechanism called “threat level” to keep everyone in suspense throughout the whole game. Threat allows players to enjoy the satisfaction of both shooting wildly at each other and dodging the hundreds of bullets raining down from enemy fighters and other players.
All player ships are fully upgradeable with four different weapon classes, engines, shields and more. Each player must buy the upgrades and navigate the path that best fits his chosen strategy in order to successfully complete his missions and attain the most glory.
Coming soon from Flying Frog Productions and designed by Jason C Hill (Last Night on Earth, Touch of Evil, Fortune and Glory) is a deck builder from the Touch of Evil board game.
Each player represents a particular monster-hunting hero in the game, and that hero determines the player’s starting deck and grants a special ability. The heroes work together to some degree to defeat villains and monsters as they collectively lose the game if ten cards land in the shadows during play. The player who has the most investigation points at the end of the game wins.
The game uses three currencies; combat (red), cunning (green) and spirit (blue), with some cards having a silver cost that can be paid with any currency. Players can acquire cards from a row of six that are available from the main deck or from piles of cards that are always available. If you fight the “Hungry Dead” an always available card that costs one of each color – you can remove a card from your deck or from the central row.
“Dark Secrets” are a special type of card that get added to your deck through various means. The card is worth negative points at the end of the game, but should you draw it during play, you remove it from the game, then draw a “Shocking Discovery” which will affect you or all players with some kind of pernicious effect.

Cryptozoic Entertainment announced that on July 14, Archer will arrive in stores. Two promo event cards, “Romain Calzado” and “The Other Barry”, will be in this first printing only. Look for games with the black circle indicating promos are inside the box.
Archer: The Danger Zone! Board Game is a high-stakes game of espionage, international intrigue, and screwing over your co-workers. The object of the game is to gain the Upper Hand over your opponents by insulting them, doing well on missions (quite the ego boost), and encountering random guest stars and secondary characters from the show. Each player starts with 5 Upper Hand. The first player to get to 20 Upper Hand wins the game. The game is based on the FX televesion series, Archer, a TV-MA rated cartoon of espionage and comedy.
The Captain is Dead is a new space-themed cooperative game from the Game Crafter and available on Kickstarter now. What’s the theme you ask? Well – it’s summed up pretty well on their KS page:
Imagine that you are one of the crew in your favorite science fiction TV show. Now imagine that in the last 10 minutes of the show things have gone so badly that the captain is dead, and you and a member of your crew have to pull together and save the day yourselves!
The Captain is Dead plays in 60-90 minutes and is meant for 2-7 players age 12+.
As of the posting of this article, Game Crafter had far surpassed their funding goal of only $2,5000 (presently at about $26k).

Sugar & Spice is a “race to complete” game from Ali Showkati. You race against other players to complete a 3-course meal. It sports some pretty neat artwork and claims to play in about 20-30 minutes and for players age 6 and up – perfect for playing with the young ones in your family.

The game is being called easy-to-learn, full of decisions, plenty of player powers, and quick to play. Harbour is set in a fantasy world where you have goblins and dwarves all vying to make a living in this Harbour town. Steve Jackson Games announced this past weekend that they have “smashed up” with Alderac Entertainment Group.
Joining the Munchkin family is Munchkin Smash Up, a game developed by AEG that will combine elements from Munchkin and AEG’s Smash Up.
Andrew Hackard, SJG’s Munchkin Brand Manager stated “I love Smash Up! It’s a cool new take on deck building and gives it a play style different from just “getting the most victory cards” or “knocking your opponent down to zero.” I don’t get to play it nearly as often as I’d like, unfortunately, but I’m looking forward to all the playtesting I’ll HAVE to do to make sure that this new set is as wonderful as it ought to be. AEG has been a great partner on Munchkin Loot Letter and it’s going to be a lot of fun working with them again.”
Gale Force Nine announced the Blue Sun expansion for the Firefly Board Game, released in 2013. Players utilizing the Blue Sun Expansion will be able to incorporate the Breakin’ Atmo (see “‘Firefly Breakin’ Atmo'”) game booster as well as the Pirates & Bounty Hunters Expansion. The Blue Sun Expansion, which comes in an attractive 10″ x 10″ x 2″ game box, and will include a new 10″ x 20″ board expanding the realms for space for exploration (including Rim Space, the Blue Sun System, and the Burnham System), plus two new ships, two new leaders for players to play as, two new Job contacts and a new supply planet, Meridian, capital of the Blue Sun system. Cryptozoic Entertainment announced that Seiji Kanai’s 2012 Love Letter, will get some more make-overs in the very near future. Cryptozoic and AEG have partnered up to bring Adventure Time, DC Comics and The Hobbit to the Love Letter world.
Love Letter is an easy to play, quick to learn 16 card game where players try to be the last person standing so they may deliver their love letter to the Princess. These new editions will contain some new effects designed in conjunction with Kanai.
“AEG is thrilled to bring Love Letter to the public in these new editions. Playing Adventure Time Love Letter will feel different than The Hobbit or Downton Abbey, but all will be true to the original design and engaging play,” says AEG’s Director of Marketing Todd Rowland.
These new editions are expected much later this year.
