I love board gaming and I love gaming with my family. I look forward to the day I can play games with my daughter, but until then I will have to settle for playing with family and friends. My current favorite games are Pursuit of Happiness, Tiny Epic Galaxies, and the Pathfinder Adventure Card Game.

Chess variants continue to multiply, and for good reason, Chess as a game has been around for centuries and has a huge following, boasting a player count in the millions. So Queenside Games, along with chess greats
Hikaru Nakamura and Anna Rudolf, are looking to shake things up with their variant called CHOKER, an app based board game which combines Chess and Poker.

In this version you start with only a single pawn and your king on the board, but don’t worry, you will be able to add more pieces to the board later. Then you are dealt a hand of five cards, each representing a chess piece that you can deploy to the board. And the zone you can deploy your pieces to is very large, encompassing your half of the entire chess board, giving you lots of options for strategic placement. But before you even get to that step you have to place a bet, wagering some amount based on how confident you are you can win with the pieces in your hand. From there you will take turns placing yours pieces on to the board. After that it becomes simple, defeat your opponent in the game of chess you just created. If you win you get all the wagered money, if not, then better luck next time.

The app will also come with lots of features like multiple game modes, AI opponents, multiplayer mode, speed mode, a points system for rewards, achievements and more. The app has already launched for Android and iOS and you can read more about the game in the press release below, as well as follow links to download it from your respective app store.

London, November 26, 2019 – Award-winning games maker Andrew Finan and developer Queenside Games are proud to announce that the chess and poker fusion game, CHOKER, is now available worldwide on iOS and Android. CHOKER™, a free-to-play game, sees the worlds of chess and poker collide in a modern reinvention of the classic games, where players need cunning and cool calculation to claim victory and win the pot.
Being crushed by the World Chess Champion sparked an idea
Andrew Finan, the CEO of Queenside Games, ran the 1995 World Chess Championships at the top of the World Trade Center in New York between reigning Russian World Champion, Garry Kasparov, and the young Indian challenger, Vishy Anand.
Inspired by their brilliance, Finan worked on his chess game hoping to be able to challenge them. When he did play them casually, he found that not only could they crush him with ease – they could do it while blind folded and playing twenty other people at the same time.  In chess there is no element of chance to help the underdog, no double six, no lucky deflection, no Royal Flush. He found himself musing about the differences between chess and poker in which you always have a chance – even against the greatest. He wondered what would happen if you added elements of poker to chess. Minutes later the basics of Choker were sketched out.
The best of both worlds
Choker brings the bluff, street smarts and unpredictability of poker into the pure skill and knowledge-based game of chess.  The result is an unfathomably deep game – a Mixed Mind Sport which requires new divergent skills.
CHOKER™ has three enthralling game phases:
1- BET: Start with just a King and a Pawn on the chess board! Then bet on the five cards depicting your additional chess pieces. This is the time to keep cool, play the odds and outwit your rival.

2 – PLACE: Place your chess pieces in special drop zones on the chess board. You’ll need a winning game strategy. Defend your King but be ready to strike.

3 – CHESS: Once all your pieces are on the chess board – it’s real chess! Outplay your opponent and win the pot before time’s up!
Multiple Game Modes – CHOKER™ allows you to match yourself against the AI to practice, your friends for bragging rights and thousands of players from around the world.
Ranks and Titles – Play real Chess Pros and Masters to become a CHOKER™ Master! Win tournaments, win rewards and rise up the global leaderboard.
Speed Chess – Players use a Chess Timer to place their pieces and play real Chess. Its blitz-speed 2-player chess! But armed with only 7 pieces, who will hold their nerve?
The players
Choker is a fast paced, strategy game that brings 21st century gaming techniques to the ancient game of chess. From today, chess players will be able to experience leveling up by winning Guru Points as well as being motivated by rewards and achievements. Steve Martin, CEO of M&C Saatchi Sports, described chess as “the “sleeping giant of the sports & entertainment world”. Queenside Games hopes to wake up this giant from its slumber with Choker. There are an estimated 600 million chess players worldwide and 200 million poker players.

When you hear the phrase Star Destroyer, most often you think of the Victory or Imperial-class Star Destroyers as they were the backbone of the Imperial Navy, and the ones most often seen on screen. But there is another that doesn’t get as much attention, and that is the Onager-class Star Destroyer, the latest ship to be added to the Star Wars: Armada lineup.

The Onager-class Star Destroyer has a unique shape that sets it apart from other Star Destroyers, but it also has another aspect that makes it unique and dangerous. That aspect would be a pair of cannons that run over half the length of the ship, providing it with unprecedented firepower and range. These cannons are fired through an new ignition attack which extends the range of the attack, but also delays the attack itself. How both of those are achieved is that at the end of the Onager-class ship’s activation you will place a targeting token at a set range within it’s firing arc. How far away you can place that token is determined by what upgrades you equip on the ship. Then at the start of the ship’s next attack phase you have to perform an ignition attack, but instead of measuring range from the ship, you measure range from the targeting token, effectively extending the range of your attack beyond most normal weapons. Add to this upgrades that allow you to turn in place to line up a shot, destroy upgrades to ships you damage, or launch an ignition attack in one turn, and you have a powerful new ship to add to your lineup.

You can look for this expansion to hit retailers in the last quarter of 2019, but in the mean time you can check out the ship and its upgrades on the FFG website.
