Antoine Fortuin

Bitten by a common house spider, Antoine emerged with the uncanny ability to buy more games than he had time to play. While living in the hills of Tennessee, USA, he tries to balance software development, family, and his multiple, competing hobbies. He hopes to someday discover a pocket dimension in which to store his games.

While there have been a number of good pirate themed games in recent years there simply isn’t enough of them for fans of the genre. Treasure Island, by Matagot, would be a welcome addition.

“Treasure Island is a game of bluffing and adventure in which one player embodies Long John, trying to mislead the others in their search for his treasure. The hunt reaches its climax with Long John’s escape, when he will make a final run to get the booty for himself!”

Designed by Marc Paquien (of Yamatai fame) and illustrated by Vincent Dutrait (known for Kennerspiel des Jahres winner, Broom Service), the game will support 2 to 6 players. Each 45-minute game involves exploration of the island and deception. Some players play as Long John Silver‘s crew who have committed mutiny while another player acts as Long John Silver himself who directs (or misdirects?) the other players to his treasure. Round after round, players question Long John Silver while he tries to escape their clutches. The game reaches its climax when Long John Silver tries to escape his crew and make a run with his treasure.

Currently, there are no details regarding the game’s release, but we expect more news soon.

Otys is an optimization and development game co-published by Pearl Games and Libellud. In Otys, each player has a team of divers who take actions, retrieve items, and complete objectives. Items are found at varying depths and different items score players varied points.

“Mid-22nd century, after 300 years of unconsciousness, the water rising engulfs the last emerged lands. Fighting for their lives, the survivor’s settlements must remain above the sea level. You live in the Otys colony and you must retrieve the past civilizations debris in the depths to build the future of humanity.”

The game originally supported 2 to 4 players but you can now download the Solo rules from the Esdevium Games website.

As of January 1st 2018, Esdevium Games will be rebranded as Asmodee UK. They’ve been part of the Asmodee Group since 2010. While the company will have a new name and look they will maintain their high standards of service and commitment to customers.

MD of Esdevium Games, Steve Buckmaster said:

“We are thrilled to be switching to the Asmodee name, aligning us with our sister and parent companies in other territories. The Esdevium name has a long and proud history (and a terrific story), so it is with some sadness that we say goodbye to the dragon logo, but this is an exciting next step for the company.”

Asmodee UK’s first public appearance will be at the London Toy Fair in January.

Chronicle X is a 1 to 7 player tactical board game in which players control a military organization, Chronicle X, or the Overmind, an alien overseeing the invasion of Earth. It’s set in a Sci-Fi Retro 1980s. Players get to choose from a group of heroes in order to form their squad, but must also manage the expansion of their base of operations. The Overmind player is able to choose from alien troops in order to build their opposition.

Each mission takes place on a board built from 4 tiles and there are 6 tiles included in the game. Chronicle X’s base of operations can be used between (and sometime’s during) missions to aid the team. Rooms such as a Med Bay or Communications Room can be built using scrap components found during missions. Scrap components can also be used to craft high tech bullets and first aid kits.

The miniatures are made from a specially produced, hot isostatic pressing (HIPS), material. It’s similar to resin minis but more durable. Each miniature is also produced as a single piece so there’s no need for assembly. Custom 12-sided dice are included and are used for combat.

Archon Studio have helped 12 Kickstarter projects come to life including League of Ancient Defenders and Vanguard of War.

The base pledge for the Core Set is $99 while the Epic pledge of $199 adds expansions and tons of additional miniatures. The project has a $40,000 funding goal and has already smashed it at 773% of the total with half the campaign still to go.

Mantic Games have provided more details about their sci-fi, dungeon crawler, Star Saga across a series of articles on their website. Star Saga is set in a futuristic world with space travel, high adventure, various alien races, and advanced technology. The game centers around Mercenaries who take on missions but are stymied by the Nexus Player (a Dungeon Master if you will). The game supports 1 to 5 players which can be played solo, competitively or cooperatively. Single games can take 30 minutes while campaigns last much longer.

“The Galactic Co-Prosperity Sphere is the most technologically advanced civilisation in the history of mankind. When a powerful corporation starts stealing secrets, a team of the galaxy’s deadliest mercenaries is hired to retrieve them. Their target: a network of laboratories hidden deep beneath the surface of the planet Eiras. The reward is high, but so is the risk! If the elite guards weren’t enough, our heroes will also have to deal with the monstrous creations of Eiras’ twisted master…”

The following Mercenaries were revealed as playable characters:

  • Captain Erika Dulinsky – Militaristic character who excels in tactics and leadership.
  • Combat Utility Roboy B07153 ‘Curby’ – Flexible robot which can be adapted to fill a specific role in the team.
  • Wrath – Roguelike, assassin with mental stability problems which are solved by the blade of his sword.
  • Francesco ‘The Devil’ Selvaggio – Close combat and demolitions expert.
  • Alyse – Thief who is able to drain the life force of her victims to heal herself and her comrades.
  • Ogan Helkarre – Engineer who is able to craft weapons.

The Artificial Nexus was designed for solo play and consists of a deck of cards which are played during the “bad guy’s” turn. Actions targeting characters, which would usually be resolved by the Nexus Player, is resolved using symbols on the card matching the state of certain characters. eg. The Mercenary furthest from the start point. Minion actions are also determined using a Minion Activation Table for each one which needs to be activated.

The Nexus Player has many tactics available to them in order to defeat the Mercenaries. Understanding the timing of the deck is crucial. They need to plan ahead so that they can bait their opponents into traps and position their minions in tactical places. Picking the right targets based on the mission objectives is also key to victory.

Should the Mercenaries survive their missions they are rewarded with experience points (XP) which allow them to level up their skills and attributes. Missions get harder as the campaign progresses so it’s important to gain as much XP as possible. Mercenaries will end up very differently from each other at the end of the campaign due to the wide range of skills available to them.

The Core Set will contain everything you need to play the game including pre-assembled, detailed miniatures and 3D scenery. Star Saga is currently available in retail stores.

Warhammer Heroes is a new initiative to recognize people who make the Warhammer community great.

Members of the community can nominate hard-working individuals such as tournament organisers or fans who bring other fans into the Warhammer fold. They’ve already had submissions for this year’s Warhammer Heroes but they would like more heroes to be considered. Quality is more important than popularity so even if your nomination isn’t widely known they could still win. Chosen Warhammer Heroes will receive prizes such as a special polo shirt, enshrining their names at Warhammer World, and a special, purpose-made medal modelled by Warhammer Community’s Rhu.

Nominations close at midnight of the 31st of December 2017.

Fantasy Flight Games have announced The Devil and the Dragon, the fourth Data Pack in the Kitara Cycle for Android: Netrunner. This Data Pack includes three copies of twenty new cards and focuses on the Criminal and Weyland Consortium identities.

The Sub-Saharan League in the world of Android is further explored:

“The establishment of the Sub-Saharan League has launched Africa to a new position as a center of technological advancement. Fueling this hotbed of innovation is the Weyland Consortium—with their SSO Industries subsidiary proven to be a profitable venture. Despite their contributions to the SSL, SSO Industries has been shut out of construction for the potential second beanstalk on the banks of Lake Victoria. What plans does Weyland have for this beanstalk, and will their focus distract them from the Runners on the fringe, waiting for a chance to strike?”

You will need to own a copy of the Revised Android: Netrunner Core Set in order to use this Data Pack in a tournament legal deck, or the original Android: Netrunner Core Set for standard play. It is currently available for pre-order from your local retailer or from the Fantasy Flight Games website.

Plaid Hat Games are sharing previews of Stuffed Fables every Wednesday until the game’s release. This week Jerry Hawthorne, the game’s designer, shared his experiences bringing the game from concept to completion.

The idea originates from a few years ago. After seeing the Pixar movie, Inside Out, he became obsessed with gamifying it’s premise. He later realized that he didn’t really want to make a game inspired by the movie but rather to create an original story experience. His idea to create a game to evoke an emotional response lead him to think about kids and their stuffed animals which acted as surrogate parents. He then thought of weaving his tale around a little girl and stuffed animals which represented different parts of her personality as she grew up. The players learn who the girl is through the stuffed animals. In order to create this story he needed to break boardgame convention by relaying the experience in the form of a book instead of on a board.

Mr Hawthorne realized this would not be easy:

“Writing a story is tough in its own right, especially one that branches in different directions, but what Colby was proposing was to make each scene in the story fit on a ten by ten inch page. This meant that each story needed to be split into evenly sized chunks, and each chunk needed to fit on the given page. And each page had to not only offer a game experience, but also advance the narrative! Writing like this is incredibly hard, but it’s also a good way to focus your approach.”

The story’s antagonists needed to evoke an emotional response so he based them on anxiety and the things which cause us to lose sleep. This prevented the tale from being too dark and scary. For a detailed account of his experiences you can read the full article on the Plaid Hat Games website.

Expected retail release date for Stuffed Fables is December 2017.
