Arcane Wonders have announced the release of Senshi coming May 2018. Senshi is a strategy game, designed by Dan Manfredini (Burgoo, Island Siege, Monkey Lab), for 2-4 players which only takes 15 minutes to play.
“You are a Senshi, a warrior-monk studying diligently at the temple under the tutelage of the current master. You and your fellow students train vigorously every day to improve your mind and body, but your master is ailing, and only one Senshi will become the next master. To prove your worth, you must develop four attributes: Strength, Agility, Wisdom, and Honor. A true master must be strong in all of these, and weak in none.” [source]
Players are competing as warrior-monks to be the temple’s next master. Each player takes a Training Card which they place before them and can then perform either a study, train, or test action. When they use the study action they take an entire stack of tiles to place on their Training Card which is limited to 3 stacks. The train action allows them to take one tile off the top of any stack on the table (including on their opponents’ Training Card) then place this tile in their hand. During the test action the player takes the tile in their hand and places it in their score pile below the Training Card. Then every player takes all tiles matching this one on top of their stacks and places them in their scoring piles.
Play continues until the last stack is removed from the center of the table and all players have a final turn. After counting all tiles in each of the scoring piles the player with the lowest score is eliminated while the player with the highest score is the master and wins the game.
For more details regarding the game and a copy of the rulebook you can check out the product page at Arcane Wonders. Senshi will be debuted at GAMA Trade Show in Reno in March so expect more details regarding the game then.
Adam’s Apple Games have Kickstarted a unique board game called Swordcrafters which has you construct a 3D sword using 2D game tiles. This is the second game from the designer, Adam Rehberg, who also designed Brewin USA.
In the game players compete to build the best sword based on its length, quality, and magic. Each round players make a cut in a grid of sword tiles then choose which of those groupings they’ll use to assemble their sword. During scoring the more adjacent matching gems you have the better the sword’s quality, and the highest sum of two gem types is the magic score, while the total length of the sword also adds points.
The game caters for 2-5 players, and you can get the base version of the game for a pledge of $29. The campaign ends March 20th, 2018, while estimated delivery is May 2018. See the Swordcrafters Kickstarter campaign page for more details.

Asmodee has founded HeidelBÄR Games, the first German Studio to join the Asmodee family. They were originally founded as Heidelberger Spieleverlag in 1989 and brought their first successful game to the market in 1992. The studio then published several games and partnered with Fantasy Flight Games and Czech Games Edition to expand its sales network. Then, at the start of 2017, Heidelberger Spieleverlag merged with Asmodee Group as Asmodee Germany.
Carol Rapp, CEO of Asmodee Germany:
“We are very happy that the combination of Asmodee and the former Heidelberger Spieleverlag brings together the best of two worlds. The studio’s creative freedom combined with the strong marketing and retail efforts of Asmodee promises great potential for all sides. That HeidelBÄR Games is the first German studio in this family is a great step into the future of our group.”
The new studio is managed by Heiko Eller-Bilz who had this to say:
“For us it is a great honor to take a place among the other successful Asmodee studios like Fantasy Flight Games, Days of Wonder, Space Cowboys, and Z-Man. As a studio we want to focus on games that build a bridge between family games and hobby games. On games that have that special something.”
HeidelBÄR Games is based in Miltenberg, Germany and the studio is already working on its new games. Visit www.heidelbär.de for their new website to see a catalog of their games and upcoming projects.
Raiding. Pillaging. Longboats. Axes. Beards. Braids. What is it about Norse men and women that keeps us so enthralled with this theme? One can’t deny that Viking society has a rich history and culture which game designers can draw upon for games as simple as providing a feast for a god, or building longboats or even mythical, and fantastical combat as the world ends.
Renegade Games Studios have had enormous success with the games in The North Sea Trilogy. Explorers of the North Sea: Rocks of Ruin is an expansion for both Explorers of the North Sea and The North Sea Saga. Designer, Shem Phillips, is adding new ways to score with players able to salvage shipwrecks, build structures, and raid fortresses. Salvaging shipwrecks provides provisions for extra actions, or timber to build structures, or battering rams to make raiding fortresses easier, or gold which is worth Victory Points. This expansion also adds a 5th player and features art by Mihajlo Dimitrievski. It’s expected to release April 2018.
In June, 2018, IELLO are releasing Raids. This viking themed game seems more combat oriented as players compete against each other as they try to retrieve treasure and earn glory. Players have ships which they sail from island to island to collect Vikings, Viking related paraphernalia, and fight monsters for points. Vikings can even board each other’s ships to attack one another. The game is designed by Matthew Dunstan and Brett J. Gilbert (who both designed Professor Evil and the Citadel of Time) with art by Biboun. Raids will support 2-4 players, aged 10+, and will play in roughly 40 mins.
